May is Mental Health Awareness Month!

A huge part of what counselors do is: (1) teach our students the skills and strategies they need to boost and protect their mental health and (2) take the stigma out of seeking help.

Please contact a member of the mental health team if you believe your child is struggling with any of the following mental health warning signs:

  • changes in school performance and attendance
  • mood changes
  • complaints of illness before school
  • increased disciplinary problems at school
  • problems at home or with the family situation (e.g., stress, trauma, divorce, substance abuse, exposure to poverty conditions, domestic violence)
  • communication from teachers about problems at school
  • dealing with existing mental health concerns

Hidden in Plain Sight (HIPS): Parent Program

Oakton High School is partnering with the Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist, Mr. McNulty, and the Fairfax County Police Department to bring back the Hidden in Plain Sight (HIPS) parent program for the second time this school year.

Hidden in Plain Sight (HIPS) is FREE and has seats available!

Thursday, May 30 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Oakton High School (Lecture Hall).  Please use Door 2 to enter.

Register here:  https://bit.ly/hipsohs05302024

The Hidden in Plain Sight (HIPS) program is an IN-PERSON interactive program for adults to be educated about the signs of risky behavior in teens and young adults. It touches on drug and alcohol use, mental health concerns, eating disorders, risky sexual behaviors and more.

The PowerPoint presentation details red flags (props will be passed around) and how they are indicative of — or used in — risky behavior. We include up to date statistics and local trends, and law enforcement officers will share their experiences they have had in our community identifying risky behavior and helping to put kids on the right path to a healthy life.  Let’s open the door to communicating with our teens!

Teacher & Staff Appreciation Week

Thank you so much to our AMAZING PTA for the breakfast, lunch, treats, gift cards, kind words, flowers, and more!  Thank you also to the 6th Grade Class of 2023 for the Frothy Mug truck!  We all feel so very fortunate to work at a school with such supportive parents!

Thank you to our amazing art teachers, Mrs. Gleason and Mrs. Georgacopoulos!  The Oakton Pyramid Art Show this week at OHS highlighted student art from our school as well as other schools in our pyramid.  Students were so proud to show off their beautiful creations to all who attended.

Helping Hands Award

Each year, the Optimist Club of Greater Vienna honors a 6th grade student from each school in the Oakton/Vienna community, whose actions on behalf of her/his class, school, or community, embody the tenet of Optimist International: “giving of one’s self in service to others will advance the well-being of humankind, community life and the world.”

OES was proud to nominate Thomas for this recognition! Thomas was elected as our SCA President this year on a platform of support for our school's Autism community. In addition to demonstrating leadership both in the classroom and as an SCA officer at weekly meetings, he has maintained his commitment by supporting students in our youngest Enhanced Autism classroom each week on Friday afternoons and as a PE Buddy during their PE time.  Thomas also volunteers his time daily to run our Panther TV morning show.  He is consistently kind and helpful; he is a supportive friend to his peers, and is a role model for all of our students.

OES will receive a $300.00 donation from the Optimist Club of Greater Vienna in honor of Thomas' outstanding service.

2024-2025 Class Assignments

At Oakton, we strive for healthy, heterogeneous student enrollment in each classroom. We have a process in place whereby teachers, specialists, and administrators confer with grade level teams to make recommendations that will result in a well-balanced classroom.  These settings include a broad range of academic levels, behavioral characteristics, and learning styles.  Teacher styles are also taken into consideration when completing teacher assignments.

To further outline the process, there are eight areas used in the determination of class assignments.  These include:

  • Heterogeneous groupings
  • Gender balance
  • Balance of special needs
  • Peer interactions
  • Special services
  • Learning environment
  • Health and medical concerns
  • Equitable distribution of students

These criteria play a role in the final decision for assignment. While parent input is welcomed, a request for an individual teacher cannot be granted.  Assigning students is a complex and educational process that we take seriously. We have developed procedures to best match students with classroom settings and teachers.

Parents are welcome to share information about their child here. All input must be shared via the google form by Monday, May 13.  We will only be using this document when we create classes, emails will not be considered.

Teacher & Staff Appreciation Week

Next week (May 6-10) is Teacher & Staff Appreciation Week and we join with our entire school community in honoring the dedication and skill of our tremendously talented staff of educators - teachers, special education teachers, specialists, counselors, resource teachers, instructional assistants, office staff, SACC, cafeteria staff, and custodians - who are devoted to making a positive difference in the lives of the children at Oakton ES. The faculty of our school is committed to excellence, and this special week of recognition is one way that we can show our appreciation.

Throughout the week, we invite parents and students to share thoughts of appreciation through notes, cards, and kind words.  We thank our wonderful PTA for all they have planned for next week to treat our staff!

Today is School Lunch Hero Day!

Our very own Mijin Lee was recognized as a school lunch hero in the FCPS News this week!  Please read the article below:

Between preparing healthy meals for America’s students, adhering to strict nutrition standards, navigating student food allergies, and offering service with a smile, school nutrition professionals — like Mijin Lee, food services kitchen manager at Oakton Elementary School — are true heroes.

“When students are asked about their favorite parts of the day, they typically answer lunch and recess,” said Oakton Elementary School Principal Christine Kelley. “Lunchtime provides a break from their busy and structured day. It allows them some downtime with their peers and an opportunity to replenish their energy.

“Ms. Mijin Lee takes pride in this important time for students and works diligently to ensure that all our children are provided the nourishment and sustenance they need to tackle the rest of their day,” Kelley continued. “She connects with children, teachers, and parents, providing kindness and love with every interaction.”

Mijin was recognized as the pyramid winner for 2023 Outstanding School-Based Operational Employee category at FCPS Honors. She has worked at Oakton Elementary School since 2015.

“Mijin has built a diverse team who work together to make lunch awesome,” a colleague said. “They can be seen eating together before the ‘rush’ and engaging in social conversations. She treats all students with respect and models on how to help others who may need additional assistance respectfully.”

Thank you, Mijin, and all our School Lunch Heroes!

Adapted PE Teacher Scores National Title

Cadi Doyle, an adapted physical education teacher at Waples Mill and Oakton elementary schools, has been named the National Teacher of the Year for Adapted Physical Education by the Society of Health and Physical Educators. Read about Cadi and this award.

Thank you to Ms. Zweibel's 4th grade class for being great stewards of our school environment.  They picked up litter around our entire school grounds.  We truly appreciate your commitment to helping take care of our special place.

The OES Spring Band concert was held this week.  Our students were impressive!  Thank you to our band directors, Debra Cockey and Jaime Holscher for the fabulous instruction and support they provide to our students!

Solo & Ensemble

On Friday, April 19 OES had 31 strings students participate in Solo and Ensemble at Rachel Carson MS. This is a voluntary event that students choose to participate in. They prepare a solo, duet or trio to perform and prepare on their on.

We also had a chamber orchestra perform 2 of the pieces that we will perform for our upcoming Spring Concert.

All students and our chamber orchestra received the highest grade of 1 and will get a medal of achievement for their efforts.  Congratulations to these outstanding students!

Thank you OES Community!

Thank you to our school’s administration, teachers, staff, PTA, SCA and its advisors; and our entire student body for helping us to celebrate Autism Acceptance Week 2024 this week in such a fun and memorable way!

Let’s keep the spirit of acceptance going each and every day!

April is the month of the Military Child.  OES honored our military families and children by observing April 17 as Purple Up Day (a day to wear purple to show support).

We celebrated our parent volunteers on Tuesday.  OES is fortunate to have such dedicated and supportive parents!  Thank you to all who volunteer and help OES be the best school we can be.

Social and Emotional Learning Screener Results Coming Soon

FCPS students in grades 3-12 took the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener in March, providing updated information on skills such as achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. The SEL Screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported.

In late April, individual student SEL Screener results will be available for families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.

Get more information about the screener on the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For support in understanding your individual child’s results or ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide or contact your child's counselor.

☀️ Solar Eclipse

A solar eclipse is happening on Monday, April 8, 2024. It's a rare and exciting astronomical phenomenon, and one that requires important safety reminders. Looking directly at the sun, even during an eclipse, can permanently damage your eyes.

The eclipse starts around 2:04 p.m., peaks at 3:20 p.m., and ends around 4:32 p.m. OES will not be sending students outside to view the eclipse. Students and staff will be provided with the NASA livestream link as an option to safely observe the eclipse.

There will be some overlap of the expected window and our dismissal. Students will be reminded to not stare at the sun, and we ask that parents remind their children that it is not safe to look directly at the sun without specialized eye protection for solar viewing (The NASA website has more information about eye safety.)

If you would like to take your child out of school early to observe the eclipse with you at home, please inform your child’s teacher.

For more details, visit the FCPS Solar Eclipse webpage.

☀️ Safely View the Total Solar Eclipse on April 8

A total solar eclipse will occur on Monday, April 8, and will be viewable, depending on weather, in Fairfax County. The eclipse will begin in our area around 2:04 p.m. and end around 4:32 p.m., with the maximum eclipse occurring around 3:20 p.m.

Because the timing overlaps with dismissal, it is crucial that students understand the importance of safe viewing practices. We encourage families to review these Solar Eclipse Resources, especially the eye safety information. We hope everyone takes the opportunity to learn more about this extraordinary natural phenomenon while prioritizing safe solar viewing.

OES 3rd grade students transformed the cafeteria into a Wax Museum this week.  Students, staff, and parents visited and learned about many important figures, such as King Tut, George Washington, David Beckham, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Coco Chanel.  The students did a fantastic job of researching and presenting!

This morning, Region1 Assistant Superintendent, Douglas Tyson, and School Board member, Karl Frisch, announced that Mrs. Kastner, OES Family Liaison, has been selected as the Region's Outstanding Operational Employee!  We have always know that she is the best!  We are so appreciative of all she does for our students and families.

Lost & Found

Please have your child claim their missing items from the lost and found ASAP.  All items remaining on Friday (3/22) will be donated.

On Monday, March 18, OES parents/guardians will be sent an email containing a link to complete the online FCPS Principal Evaluation Parent/Guardian Feedback Form. This questionnaire is part of the VDOE-mandated Performance Evaluation Program for principals and offers parents/guardians an opportunity to provide anonymous input about various topics related to our school. These topics include how the principal demonstrates/impacts instructional leadership, school climate, management, communication and community relations, culturally responsive and equitable leadership, and professionalism within the school.

The questionnaire will be administered between March 18 and April 5. When you receive an email from FCPS Surveys, please take a few minutes to complete the questionnaire. Thank you!

Therapy Dog Visits

We have some exciting news to share with you!  A volunteer, certified by the Alliance of Therapy Dogs (ATD), has generously offered to visit OES monthly with her dog, Harper, for the remainder of this school year. Harper's first visit will be on Monday, March 18.

We are thrilled with the possibilities this experience will offer, including working with students in small groups, reading with children, and helping children to practice their fluency skills. Additionally, the simple presence of a dog at school can bring joy, provide support, and lower stress levels of children, which optimizes learning capacity. Any therapy dog visiting OES will have passed the requirements of ATD, is insured, and is up to date on all vaccinations. Learn more about the ATD.

If you do not want your child(ren) to interact with a therapy dog, fill out the form linked here as soon as possible. Unfortunately, not all students will have the opportunity to meet Harper this year.

Spring Picture Day Tuesday, March 19

Order online or by returning the order form with cash or check on picture day (forms went home in Tuesday folders)

Once you receive your child’s photo packet you will also have a chance to order pictures online.

Social & Emotional Learning (SEL)

FCPS celebrates SEL day on March 8.

See information below from our counselors about what SEL is and how you can support your child(ren) at home.  Click on the FCPS SEL website to learn more.  VDOE defines SEL as “The process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions.” SEL is made up of 5 areas of knowledge and skill: self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision making, relationship skills and social awareness.

What you can do at home to support SEL:

  • Emotions check in – make this a normalized thing
  • You can ask your child
    • how are you feeling right now? (Say the emotions out loud, on paper or draw it out)
    • Why are you feeling this way?
    • What might help you feel better?
  • Mindful morning check in
  • Take 5 slow, deep breaths
  • List four things you can see around you
  • List three things you're grateful for
  • Say two positive statements about yourself
  • Name one thing you're looking forward to today
  • Create a gratitude list
  • Ask about friendships/classmate encounters
  • Reflect on different perspectives

Attendance

We are seeing a rise in students being absent from school for family travel. These absences are unexcused.

Children who show up for school regularly develop fundamental reading and math skills while building a habit of good attendance that will carry them into college and careers. Research shows that children who were chronically absent in kindergarten and 1st grade were far less likely to read proficiently at the end of 3rd grade.

Please partner with us to ensure that your child is getting the most of their education by having them at school every day and on time.

We are looking forward to meeting our rising Kindergarteners!  To register your child for kindergarten for the 2024-2025 school year, they must be 5 years old, on or before September 30, 2024.

Thank you to OES' School Social Worker, Haley Narins!

March 3-9 is National School Social Work Week. Social workers in FCPS help to prevent social, emotional, and behavioral factors from affecting a student's ability to perform at their best. Their primary goal is to remove barriers that prevent a student from fulfilling their academic potential. Social workers are assigned to every school and center in the school division. Most social workers serve one to two sites. Learn more about the role of social workers in FCPS

Eating Disorder Parent Information

In 2013, Virginia passed a law requiring every school system to provide information to parents annually about eating disorders with parents/guardians of students in the fifth through twelfth grades.

According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA 2023),

Eating disorders are serious but treatable mental and physical illnesses that can affect people of all genders, ages, races, religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, body shapes, and weights. In the United States, 28.8 million Americans will suffer from an eating disorder at some point in their lives.

There is no single cause of an eating disorder. Rather, it is a complex combination of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors that converge and set off an individual’s predisposed genetic vulnerability.

In collaboration with the Fairfax County Health Department, FCPS has developed a web page with detailed information and resources about eating disorders.  To find out more, please visit the FCPS Eating Disorders website.

In addition to the information on the FCPS website, the National Eating Disorders Association has a toll free, confidential Helpline, 1-800-931-2237.
